Certified food grade 5-gallon HDPE buckets start at $9.99/unit at PailHQ — FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant, virgin HDPE resin, BPA-free, made in USA. Unlike hardware store buckets (which use non-food-safe colorants), these pails ship with full documentation of food-grade compliance. Order online → | Get bulk pricing →
3-point food grade certification checklist (all three required):
- HDPE #2 recycling symbol — molded into the bottom of the pail
- "Food Safe" or "FDA Approved" marking — on the container itself, not just a sticker
- Virgin (not recycled) resin — no post-consumer content, no unknown additives
PailHQ M2 pails pass all three. Home Depot, Harbor Freight, and most Amazon listings fail at least one.

What Makes These Pails Actually Food Grade
The phrase "food grade" is widely misused. Here is exactly what makes the PailHQ M2 pail FDA-compliant — and why most hardware store and generic Amazon buckets fail the standard:
1. Virgin HDPE Resin (No Recycled Content)
FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 requires that plastics in direct food contact use virgin (first-use) resin with a documented chemical composition. Recycled HDPE — even #2 — may contain residues from previous contents, processing additives, or contaminants with unknown migration profiles.
PailHQ M2 pails: 100% virgin HDPE resin, no post-consumer content, manufacturer documentation available on request.
Home Depot Homer Bucket: No virgin resin certification, orange colorant contains pigments not tested for food migration.
2. FDA-Approved Colorants (or No Colorant)
White and natural-translucent are the only food-safe colors for HDPE pails. Any pigmentation requires FDA-approved colorant documentation under 21 CFR 178.3297. Orange, green, red, black, and yellow pails almost universally fail this requirement.
PailHQ M2 pails: White HDPE with no colorants. No pigment migration risk.
Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Lowe's standard buckets: Colored with pigments not tested for food contact compliance.
3. Clean Manufacturing Environment
FDA food contact compliance requires GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) production — controlled environment, no lubricant contamination, no mold-release agent migration.
PailHQ M2 pails: Manufactured at FDA-registered facilities in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Food Grade Bucket Verification Guide
If you already have a bucket and need to check if it is food grade, follow this three-step process:
Step 1 — Check the recycling symbol.
Look at the bottom of the bucket. Find the triangle with a number inside. It must say 2 (HDPE). If it says 5 (PP), 1 (PET), or any other number, it is not the preferred material for food contact under FDA guidelines.
Step 2 — Check for the food-safe marking.
Look for the words "Food Grade," "Food Safe," or "FDA Approved" molded directly into the plastic on the bottom or side. A paper sticker that says "food safe" does not count — it can be applied to any product by any seller. The marking must be part of the container itself.
Step 3 — Check the color.
If the bucket is white or natural (translucent) with no pigment, it may be food grade. If it is any bright color — orange, yellow, green, black, blue — it almost certainly is not, unless it has explicit FDA colorant documentation.
All three must pass. A white bucket with the #2 symbol but no "food grade" marking is still unconfirmed. Do not assume.
Who Buys Food Grade 5-Gallon Buckets
Emergency Preparedness / Long-Term Food Storage
Food grade HDPE pails are the container of choice for storing grains, rice, beans, flour, and dried goods for 1–30+ years. With a Gamma Seal lid and mylar bag liner, a single 5-gallon pail of rice provides 30+ lbs of shelf-stable food.
For long-term water storage, see our 5 gallon bucket water storage guide. For complete food storage best practices, see long-term food storage in 5 gallon buckets.
Recommended setup: PailHQ M2 pail + Gamma Seal lid + mylar bag + oxygen absorber = 25-year shelf life.
Homesteading and Home Fermentation
Home brewers, winemakers, kombucha producers, and mead makers require food-grade containers for fermentation to prevent chemical contamination of the ferment.
HDPE #2 is non-reactive with alcohols, organic acids, and sugars. It does not off-gas or leach compounds that affect flavor at fermentation temperatures (65–75°F).
See our brewing and fermentation guide for setup specifics.
Commercial Food Processing
Food manufacturers, bakeries, catering operations, and food distributors are legally required to use FDA-compliant containers for direct food contact under 21 CFR Part 117 (Current Good Manufacturing Practice for Human Food).
For B2B food processing orders and documentary compliance support (FDA letters, SDS sheets, resin certification), contact us at sales@pailhq.com or call 954-594-2108.
Pet Food Storage
Food grade pails are the safest choice for storing dry pet food, treats, and supplements. The same HDPE properties that protect human food (no leaching, no off-gassing) make these ideal for pet applications, including extended storage in garages and outbuildings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are all HDPE #2 buckets food grade?
No. HDPE #2 is the correct material, but food grade compliance also requires virgin (not recycled) resin, FDA-approved colorants (or no colorant), and GMP manufacturing conditions. Many HDPE #2 buckets sold at hardware stores do not meet all three requirements.
Can I use a food grade bucket for water storage?
Yes. Food grade HDPE is safe for potable water storage. For long-term water storage (1+ year), use a food grade pail with a gasket lid to prevent evaporation. Change stored water every 6–12 months or treat with water treatment tablets for extended storage.
Is the PailHQ pail safe for acidic foods like fermented vegetables or vinegar?
Yes. HDPE has excellent resistance to organic acids, including acetic acid (vinegar), lactic acid (fermented vegetables), and citric acid. It is the standard material used by commercial producers of fermented foods for exactly this reason.
Do food grade buckets come with food grade lids?
Lids are sold separately at PailHQ. All lid options (snap-on, Gamma Seal, gasket lid) are compatible with the M2 pail. Gamma Seal lids are the most popular choice for food storage applications — they create an airtight seal and allow easy repeated access without tools.
What is the minimum order quantity?
There is no minimum. You can order 1 unit. Volume pricing kicks in at 6 units (−8%) and again at 25 units (−20%). Free shipping starts at 36 units.
Does the bucket have a food-grade marking on it?
Yes. The PailHQ M2 pail has the food-safe designation molded into the bottom of the container.
How long will food last in a PailHQ food grade bucket?
Dry goods (rice, wheat, beans, oats) properly sealed in food grade pails with oxygen absorbers last 25–30 years. Without oxygen absorbers, expect 5–10 years. Liquids (water, brine, oil) last 1–5 years depending on the contents. The pail itself will outlast the stored food in virtually all scenarios.
Are these pails also UN certified for chemical storage?
Yes. The PailHQ M2 pail carries UN 1H2/Y27/S certification, which means it is also DOT-approved for storing and shipping solid hazardous materials in Packing Groups II and III. This is the same container for both food and industrial chemical applications.
