Moisture Barrier

Moisture Barrier

A material property or packaging layer that prevents water vapor from passing through, critical for dry goods storage.

A moisture barrier is a packaging property that prevents water vapor transmission (WVT) through the container walls. HDPE provides a good moisture barrier with a water vapor transmission rate of approximately 0.3-0.5 g·mil/100in²·24hr. For maximum moisture protection in long-term food storage, HDPE pails are often lined with mylar bags and sealed with oxygen absorbers. A proper moisture barrier prevents clumping, mold growth, and degradation of stored products like flour, sugar, feed, and chemicals.
