Freight Class
Freight Class
NMFTA classification system (50-500) that determines shipping rates based on density, handling, and liability.
Freight class is a standardized classification system established by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) that assigns a number (50-500) to commodities for LTL shipping rate calculation. Classification is based on density, handling difficulty, stowability, and liability. Empty plastic pails typically fall in freight class 125-175. Lower freight classes result in lower shipping costs per pound.
