UN Liquid Certified 5 Gallon Pails
The M4 5-gallon HDPE pail is our liquid-rated variant, built on the same manufacturing platform as the M2 but tested and certified for liquid contents. Unlike the M2, which we stock and ship in standard configurations, the M4 is a custom-order product. There is no per-unit price on this page because the answer depends on your specific liquid, your quantity, and your printing requirements. Request a quote and we will price it against your actual shipment profile.
Why the M4 exists as a separate pail
UN certification is not a general endorsement of a container — it is a specific claim tied to specific test conditions. The M2 was tested with solid contents and carries the marking 1H2/Y27/S. To make a certified liquid claim, M&M Industries had to test the pail again with liquid contents, at specific fill ratios, against a hydrostatic pressure requirement. The result of those tests is the M4, which carries three separate markings depending on how it was configured:
- 1H2/Y1.5/30 — liquid-rated, Packing Group II, density up to 1.5 kg/L, tested to 30 kPa hydrostatic pressure
- 1H2/X40/S — liquid-rated, Packing Group I (the highest hazard tier), gross mass 40 kg — solids configuration
- 1H2/Y40/S — liquid-rated, Packing Group II, gross mass 40 kg — solids configuration
All three markings appear on M4 pails, embossed by M&M during manufacture. Which marking applies to your shipment depends on what you're shipping. Your compliance team will know; if they don't, we can walk them through it.
Ground and vessel only. Not air.
This is the single most important limitation on the M4, and we lead with it because it is the one that catches people out. The M4's UN certification covers ground transport (road and rail) and vessel transport (marine). It does not cover air transport. If your shipment goes on a plane at any point in its journey, the M4 alone does not satisfy IATA packaging requirements — you will need a specifically air-certified packaging combination, which is a different product and a different conversation.
If your liquid hazmat ships domestic ground or overseas by sea container, the M4 is designed for that. If it ships air freight, talk to your carrier's dangerous goods team first, then talk to us.
Why custom-order
M2 pails sell in high enough volume that we stock them in white and ship next-day. M4 pails do not. Most M4 orders are project-specific: a chemical distributor consolidating a specific product line, an industrial buyer replacing a discontinued liquid packaging, a manufacturer setting up a new production line. Each order tends to have specific color, printing, and quantity requirements. Building to order lets us match your exact spec without carrying inventory of the wrong variant.
Typical M4 order lead time is 6-8 weeks from approved quote to delivery, depending on color and printing complexity.
What goes into a quote
When you request a quote, include as much of the following as you can. The more we have upfront, the faster we can price it.
- The liquid you plan to ship (name and SDS if available)
- Packing group (I, II, or III) if known
- Quantity per order and expected annual volume
- Preferred color (white is standard; custom colors add cost and lead time)
- Printing requirements (none, single-color logo, full-color label)
- Delivery destination (affects freight quote)
- Air-transport requirement (if yes, we will flag this immediately)
- Target in-hand date (helps us schedule against the 6-8 week lead time)
