UN Solid Certified 5 Gallon Pails

Solid-only UN certification means one specific thing: the pail passed the drop, stack, and pressure tests required for 1H2/Y27/S designation with granular or powdered contents inside. Our M2 5-gallon HDPE pail carries that marking. This page is the engineering detail behind it.

What "solid-rated" tests actually measure

The M2 was subjected to three test regimes at the M&M Industries plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Drop test: pail loaded to rated gross mass, dropped from 1.2 meters onto its most vulnerable corner. Stacking test: pail loaded and held under compressive load equivalent to a stack three high plus a safety factor, for 24 hours minimum. Internal pressure test: seal integrity verified under specified hydrostatic pressure. Pass criteria: no rupture, no leakage of contents, no failure of the closure system. All three passed at Packing Group II performance (the higher of PG II and PG III performance requirements).

Why solids-only

The "S" at the end of the marking is not a limitation the manufacturer chose — it reflects how the pail was tested. Liquid-rated markings (X, Y, or Z followed by density and a hydrostatic pressure value) require a different test protocol with liquid contents at specific fill ratios. The M2 was certified for solids, not liquids, because solids is what the market wants at this price and quantity tier. For liquid-rated 5-gallon HDPE, see our M4 liquid-rated pails — that's a different pail, different marking, different test regime.

HDPE resin selection

The pail is molded from virgin high-density polyethylene, food-contact grade. Recycled resin is not used in this pail because UN certification requires consistent material properties across production runs, and recycled HDPE varies more than virgin resin does. If your compliance program requires a resin traceability letter, we can pull one from the manufacturer.

Closure integrity

UN certification does not travel with the pail alone — it travels with the pail plus its correctly installed closure. The M2 uses a tear-tab lid that snaps into position and forms a leak-resistant seal when installed per M&M's published closure instructions. If the lid is not fully seated, or is reused after removal, the UN marking on the pail no longer certifies the closed container. This is one of the most common causes of failed compliance audits on otherwise-correct packaging.

Closure instructions ship with pallet orders and are available on request for smaller quantities.
